Sorry that I havent been to the meeting lately. Key club has been getting in the way of things. I already read Twilight and I would just like to say that I think it is an amazing book. There is also a sequal to it called New Moon. If you enjoyed the book as much as I did, you should check the sequal out too. There is a third one coming out also. I don't know exactly when though.
I thought that the themes and the storyline in Twilight were very cool and really captivated the reader's mind and attention. What do you think about the way heaven is portrayed?
2. What does Susie learn in her heaven?
3. What happens to Susie's parents to drive them so far apart?
4. Why does Ruth become a major character?
5. Why is sexuality so important to Susie, even after death?
6. What are the 'lovely bones' of the novel?
7. Why is it not important that Mr. Harvey be caught?

We also talked a little about the author's life...thought it was interesting that she grew up outside of Philadelphia, was raped her freshmen year at Syracuse, and is a recovering heroin and alcohol addict. Book Club met last Thur to discuss The Lovely Bones. Unfortunately, I was not able to participate in the entire discussion, but I think the underlying question about the book was whether Sebold needed to be that graphic in her descriptions. I will encourage the book club members to post more about the discussion.

The book schedule for the rest of the year was also decided on and is posted at http://www.wtps.org/wths/imc/Reading/student%20book%20club/2006.htm

They will be reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower for their next meeting on Tuesday, November 28th.

My Sister's Keeper-Thoughts

I liked the book. The way it was written made it easily to get into, even after taking a few days break in between chapters. I liked that there were many different perspectives and different fonts for each one. My favorite character was Jesse. I can relate with having a sister that needs a lot of attention. He wants to help his sister but there wasn't much he could do. I always wanted his sections to last longer. My least favorite character was the mother. She ignored Jesse and Anna was just there to give bone marrow and whatnot to her sister. The mother would do anything for Kate, but practically nothing for her other kids.
The ending was sad and kind of ironic. The entire book, Kate was nearing death, but it was Anna that ran right into it. She actually, by dying, served her purpose, which was to keep Kate alive. By her dying, Kate was able to get what she needed and live.

Finally...

How long have I been saying I would post about My Sister's Keeper? Like others, I am impressed with her style of writing and her ability to really give you the characters' personalities, no matter what their ages or yours. I really loved some of her quotes..."You are allowed to take a break, you know. No one has to be a martyr twenty-four/seven." Sara replies, "I think once you sign on to be a mother, that's the only shift they offer." "I said martyr," Zanne laughs. "Not mother." Sara smiles a little. "Is there a difference?" Of course I can relate to this one about motherhood...it is the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life. Funny my 7 yr. old daughter was truly amazed when I told her this fact the other day! Maybe we don't really appreciate our parents' perspective until much later in life--I think this just occurred for me recently. And this one, that I hold true, made me sad..."They {our children} outgrow us so much faster than we outgrow them." From Brian, who I adored, when he discusses the connection between fire and hope through the use of the Pandora's box myth. "When she opened the box, out came plagues and misery and mischief. She managed to shut the lid tight before hope escaped. It's the only weapon we have left to fight the others." And lastly from Kate as she discusses grief. "...as much as you want to hold on to the bitter sore memory that someone has left this world, you are still in it. And the very act of living is a tide: at first it seems to make no difference at all, and then one day you look down and see how much pain has eroded." I find this to be amazingly on the money. Humans are shockingly resilient and death is one of the universal truths that ties us together. I did not mind the ending at all...to me it drove home my belief that life as we know it can change in an instant and often times we don't have a lot of control over major aspects of our lives...each day is a gift. I guess I felt the most for Anna and Brian. I admired Anna for having the guts to stick up for herself and I just thought Brian was a wonderful, caring father. Lastly, from looking over the discussion questions, I determined that Ms. Picoult spends a good deal of time researching for her books, which of course pleases the librarian in me. I was surprised to read how she came up with the idea for My Sister's Keeper while researching eugenics for another book entitled Second Glance. Eugenics is "the science that deals with the improvement (as by control of human mating) of hereditary quatlities of a race or breed." This concept is mostly associated with Hitler, but in the 1930s, pre-Hitler, the U.S. had eugenics programs and sterilization laws- little known, interesting, yet horrific historical facts. I'd love to research more on this topic...perhaps one of you could! Ironically the government called this the Progressive Era. Anyway, trivia for curious minds and this made me want to read another Picoult book. How do you all feel about genetic manipulation of embryos? ....the implications are so far reaching.

Picoult

I agree with the comment about Picoult's ability to give her reader's every point of view. In her book The Tenth Circle she also does a great job of writing from all perspectives. I really liked how it gave everyone's perspective on what was happening and the different fonts for different people. But what I really loved about this book is the ending. I thought it was really good. The story line was very interesting which made me not able to put the book down. I finished the whole thing in like three days. Jodi Picoult ( i think) is a brillant writer. I'm also reading another book by her called Plain truth. It also has a very interesting storyline. Basically, My Sister's Keeper is one of my favorite books. I must have cried at least every three chapters. I enjoyed it so much that I chose another book by her called The Pact as my english research book this year. That too was an excellent read! I did not like how My Sister's Keeper ended though. She worked so hard to get the rights to her own body and then she just dies in a car crash. Despite the ending, this book is definetly in my top 5. I also started reading The Lovely Bones and it is interesting in the sense that we actually see her perspective from heaven. And i could not believe that they just jump into her getting murdered in the first chapter. Another title is The Traveller - this is a SF book with the premise that the Patriot Act results in a secret government controlling world and time travellers who can bring social change - it's the first in a series - the author doesn't use his real name because he believes we should "all stay under the grid."
